What are These Things Called Hashtags?

Hashtags are simply a way to "flag" a tweet so that people can find them easily using either Twitter search or or tweetdecks search function. Frequently, conferences will announce that everyone at that conference should "tag" all of their tweets with a certain hashtag so attendees can find them easily. For example, those who tweeted from NECC 2009 tagged their tweets with: #necc09. See screenshots below for examples.
